New fire at Marsascala recycling plant likely caused by pyrotechnic material; no one injured

Wednesday, 24 January 2018, 20:33 Last update: about 7 years ago

A fire that broke out at the Sant Antnin recycling plant in Marsascala was probably caused by pyrotechnic material that were mixed with material sent for recycling, WasteServ said this evening.

The fire was reported at around 5:30pm. WasteServ said it had taken immediate precautionary action to control the flames. The Civil Protection Department was asked to assist.

The Police and the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) were also involved. No one was injured.

A small fire broke out in part of the plant earlier this month.

Last year a large part of the recycling facility was ravaged by a big blaze that took several hours to be extinguished.

A resident recently told The Malta Independent on Sunday that he had warned the authorities about the risks weeks before the 22 May fire.
