latest comment from Jim Wightman, 13/10/2024 16:48: Good, but not good without a stick. Just incentivising will not work. It's just safer to say that to avoid losing votes. Cash for cars won't work. There needs to be both push and pull. This has been proven all over the world. As for "we need alternatives to give up our cars" why? We had alternatives. Collectively at 25% in 2010. By 2021 they were just 15%, and between then and now we lost 5 alternative service providers, because drivers did not want to change. We spent €700m making it easier to drive, why should we spend more making it easier not to drive (a pull, without a dirty great big push, like parking meters and road pricing). How would a trackless tram stop someone buying a new car? Fanciful altruism? Have free buses, reduced car sales? No. We need to toughen up, make hard choices. Look at Paris, even the UK.

You don't expect criminals to be enrolled as police officers and then protect them in a way to give them the liberty to provoke or react negatively to the citizen. The way the police has been acting lately when you try to submit a report leaves much to be desired, especially when they try to discourage victims to proceed with an official report. We have read many testimonies like this on the media. On the other hand, the police should again be equipped with a uniform that gives them dignity and authority to being back that air of discipline which they once had.
