Crystal magic

Malta Independent Monday, 17 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

There was a time when the only Swarovski you'd ever consider buying was a crystal dolphin for your mantelpiece. It cried rich and classic, but chic it was not.

Now crystals and crystal components have become cool and ubiquitous on the fashion scene. Swarovski, for one, sponsors shows of the world's best designers, like Julien Macdonald and Alexander McQueen. Locally, bead artist Jacky Menhennet can safely be credited with turning the once-naff Swarovki crystal components (represented in Malta by the Sewing Centre) into sparkling fashionable favourites. She has used beads and crystals to make outstanding flowers, ornaments, and jewellery for the last four years and her name is now synonymous with exclusive and original design.

She keeps a low profile and her work was only showcased once with an exhibition at Cleland & Souchet last year. Yet word has spread: if you want to invest in one-off pieces of jewellery without robbing the bank, go to Jacky. This year she joined forces with seasoned designer Maria Fleri Soler. Together they are putting together an artistic show of one-off pieces of jewellery and clothes to seduce the public into the ethereal and glittering world of fashion. Jacky and Maria's creations show their love for glamour.

"We are planning an event which will be a magical night of sparkling jewellery, high fashion, choreographed movement, good food and flowing wine that will make our guests feel special. I am blessed to be surrounded by a good team which is working on every detail to make this show a success, says Jacky.

Crystal Magic is happening at the Westin Dragonara Resort on June 7 at 8pm. Tickets are available from the Westin.
