First words...

Malta Independent Monday, 17 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

One meets a great many people in this business which is one of its joys. Those of us who have met Janatha Stubbs, and there are many of us, appreciate her many qualities. In spite of her active involvement in various organisations she is best known for her work at Il-Razzett tal-Hbiberija which has now become part of the fabric of Malta. I first met her when she was President of Soroptimists International and her seriousness and focus struck me. However, she did everything with a certain lightness and pleasantness and her leadership was firm but unobtrusive.

I should have run her interview last month but I shall not bore you with the details as to why I did not. Well, here it is at last, mostly focused on the inspiring work of Razzett.

We always enjoy looking at beautiful things even if we cannot afford them. Look at the lovely necklace on page 14 from the Russian Imperial Treasure which is going to be auctioned by Sotheby’s soon. It is hardly the sort of necklace you would wear to the August Moon ball but what a perfect piece it is. More beautiful jewellery which has adorned many women now long gone is featured on pages 16 and 17.

Mirvat Sarkis Zammit met her Maltese husband on the internet. Apart from giving us a little autobiography she also cooked all the Lebanese recipes we are featuring. Unfortunately because of lack of space I had to leave the dessert out. What a spread! Enjoy it. It starts on page 48.

Maryann Kissaun’s name has been legendary for many years in Malta. How many women of her generation have gone beyond bringing up a family and the ubiquitous cocktail party? Yet she flourished beyond these shores, giving recitals all over the world. I take my hat off to her. She kindly accepted to feature in our popular series My Favourite Room.

There is Christopher Buttigieg secretary of the relaunched Chevening Alumni Association talking about its objectives (interview starts on page 37); Anne-Louise Debeusscher tells us a little about her work at the French Embassy and her aspirations (interview starts on page 27) and do read what Louise Doneo who is the lead in the new series on Super One, Solitaire, has to say.

There is art, health, beauty and plenty of pictures from red carpet events in this issue.

Enjoy reading it!
