New Infrastructure system for Vittoriosa Waterfront

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

This system was installed at a cost of Lm105,000 to the Cottonera Waterfront Group plc, Grand Harbour Marina Ltd and Port Cottonera Ltd – the three private companies restoring and developing the waterfront.

The system has been designed to take all sewage from land developments extending from Fort St Angelo, St Angelo Wharf and along Vittoriosa and Bakery Wharves, besides those of the super-yacht berths operated by Grand Harbour Marina Ltd. The government has connected the system from St Angelo Gate to the existing galleries in Silver Jubilee Street, Cospicua.

Two new underground pumping stations have been installed, one below quay level outside the Caraffa Stores, and the other below quay level outside the Maritime Museum, also on the Vittoriosa Waterfront. A third pumping station has been installed in the basement of St Angelo Mansions, the new apartment block next to the Caraffa Stores.

The Water Services Corporation has provided the necessary water supply for the developments and the yacht marina to a termination point at St Angelo Gate, and Enemalta Corporation has provided the power supply, also to a termination point at St Angelo Gate.

The Cottonera Waterfront Group plc has built a new electricity substation below Old Prison Street to service the power requirements of the new waterfront development.

The application for development permission for the sub-station was submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in October 2002 and approved last January. These electrical works have cost Lm60,000.
