Adbi Rahman, 26, was accused of not obeying police orders and assaulting PC Christopher Falzon and Ga-al Adburhahman Hassan in Balzan last Tuesday. He allegedly slightly injured Mr Hassan. The man was also charged with damaging a car through carelessness, running too fast and endangering pedestrians, breaching the peace, being drunk in public, and trespassing.
Sources close to the investigation said the accused attacked Mr Hassan for switching off the light in his room. The fight continued outside and a parked car was damaged due to the victim being pushed onto it. Prosecuting inspector Kevin Farrugia said Rahman often caused trouble at the refugee detainment centres. “Sometimes he can be arrogant although at other times he is perfectly civil,” the inspector said.
Mr Farrugia added that when the accused had a drink or two, he stopped reasoning and acted foolishly.
The accused’s request for bail was denied and he was remanded in custody because he has no fixed residence. The court was presided over by Magistrate Antonio Mizzi.
