Matthew Micallef, 21, was charged with heroin possession and trafficking together with cannabis and ‘speed’ possession.
He denied the charges pressed against him and did not ask to be released on bail.
Defence attorney Dr Ian Farrugia asked presiding magistrate Silvio Meli to order a mental examination of the accused to be carried out while Micallef is in preventative custody.
