Fire Breaks out in Mater Dei Hospital offices

Malta Independent Saturday, 11 September 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Yesterday, there was another twist in the saga when a fire broke out in an office, causing hundreds of liri worth of damage. This means that part of the building that is still under construction will have to be repaired before the hospital is opened.

The police and Civil Protection Department were alerted to the fire by a policeman who was on duty on site, police sources told The Malta Independent. No one was injured as a result of the fire – all the workers had already been evacuated by the time firemen and police officials arrived at the scene.

It took firemen a considerable time to control the fire that had spread to a number of partitions in the office.

Duty magistrate Giovanni Grixti was informed about the case. He appointed several court experts to assist him with the inquiry. The experts have to determine the cause of the fire, that is still not known. They also have to quantify the damage the fire caused, which is expected to climb to thousands of liri.
