Hamrun Spartans FC and Hamrun Liberty S.C. will be holding joint activities to celebrate their respective success in football and basketball this season.
This is an historic event for Hamrun. For the first time ever, two associations from this town are joining forces in one celebration for sport’s sake.
The Hamrun Spartans football club won promotion to the Premier League, while Hamrun Liberty are the new men’s basketball champions.
Both executive committees gave details of their forthcoming activities during a media conference yesterday afternoon at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, to highlight the unity which exists between Hamrun inhabitants at present.
Tomorrow, following the Hamrun-Naxxar league match at Victor Tedesco Stadium (kick-off 5pm), the Spartans will be presented with the First Division championship trophy, if hopefully they avoid defeat, while Liberty S.C. will also exhibit their basketball championship trophy, followed by merry celebrations inside the Stadium.
Celebrations will come to the fore with an evening band march at 8pm, starting from Canon street and ending up at the Mile End, near both clubs’ sport complexes.
All three band clubs from Hamrun, St Gaetan, St Joseph and the Immaculate Conception will unite to form one large band for the occasion.
Hamrun Liberty won the basketball national title after a 20-year absence. Ironically, present coach Alfred Mifsud also lead the side to its first title in 1984/85.
Liberty also won this year’s Knock-Out to make it a memorable double.
Hamrun Spartans have won promotion to the Premier League after only one year in the First Division. The good work by coaching staff, players, committee members, supporters and the Football Nursery have been given credit for this achievement. Hamrun Spartans will be commemorating the club’s 100 years of existence in 2007.
