The Malta Environment and Planning Authority removed a series of structures which were erected illegally at the Buskett Roadhouse complex in Buskett.
The illegal structures removed include a gate, a store, over 200ft of railing and three gazebos. The rest of the illegal structures are to be removed by the owner in the coming weeks and, failing which, a further direct action will follow.
In a statement issued yesterday, the authority said that all structures were built on one of Malta’s most protected areas.
Primarily Buskett is protected because the area homes several species, which are rare, endangered or vulnerable. A number of endemic species, or, species with restricted distribution, are also present. Furthermore, Buskett is of high ecological value since it incorporates a variety of important communities. Some of these communities are very rare.
Secondly, Buskett is covered by the Natura 2000 regulations. Furthermore, this is recognised as a special area of conservation of international importance, due to both its ecological and scientific value.
