Contact Dance company in triple bill

Malta Independent Saturday, 23 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Choreographer and artistic director of Contact Dance Company Francesca Abela Tranter will be showcasing her company in a triple bill dance performance at the Valletta Waterfront. The theatre show will be held on Tuesday, 26 July and Wednesday, 27 July at 8.30pm.

Francesca will premiere her latest collaboration Poetry in Motion, accompanied by the renowned percussionist Renzo Spiteri and Tempest, influenced by John Cage, and the percussive use of the piano in Prepared Piano pieces. Renzo Spiteri has worked on an adaptation for the first two movements that is actually played on percussion. His music for the third movement is the result of an artistic collaboration with choreographer and dancers, while lighting design is in the capable hands of Anton Borg Olivier.

The evening will be a theatre dance experience which will also feature a tailored choreography for Contact Dance Company by Michael Joseph from the UK entitled: Are you Right and I'm Wrong to the musical score by Mozart and a duet performance Hip Hop Can't Stop, choreographed and danced by Michael Joseph and Garry Benjamin (UK).

The evening will be rounded off with another premiere for Malta, TV OD, choreographed by Welshman Douglas Comley, which bridges dance with physical theatre. Two workshops are being held at the Dance Workshop by Michael and Garry which will be based on their performance, hip hop, contemporary dance and capoeira (more details are available by emailing [email protected]).

Founded in 1999, Contact Dance Company has toured extensively with a group of seven dancers – all coming from a rich dance background – namely, Rachel Axisa, Yasmine Nuvoli, Fiona Barthet, Olivia Vella, Francesca Vassallo, Elisabeth Caruana Galizia and Jeanelle Cassar.
