BBC Prime On Multiplus

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Multiplus, Malta’s digital terrestrial TV provider, has launched BBC Prime, the BBC’s international entertainment channel, on its network.

In a press conference at the Hilton, CEO Jan Spiteri said: “BBC Prime represents a very important addition to the Multiplus channel line up. Multiplus is very grateful for the support of BBC Worldwide and for their efforts in making this channel available to use in Malta on DTT.”

He said this exercise will allow BBC Prime to be broadcast on other DTT platforms across Europe.

Dr Spiteri explained that this was due to the fact that previously, BBC Prime only had a licence to be broadcast on satellite or cable.

“We saw them as a valued addition to our service and told them to see if they could get a DTT licence, which they now have,” said Dr Spiteri.

BBC Prime will be broadcast on channel 301, Multiplus.

“BBC Prime showcases the best of BBC comedy, drama, music, entertainment documentary and lifestyle programming,” said Dr Spiteri.

BBC Prime is broadcast to 22 million subscribers across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia on cable and satellite. Also, it recently launched its Asian channel.

BBC Worldwide’s director of channels, Wayne Dunsford said: “We are delighted to announce this deal with Multiplus.

BBC Prime has a long association with Malta and the people who live here.

This deal represents an excellent opportunity for us to cement that relationship and increase our audience further.”

He said that Malta had a large BBC viewership.

“People speak the same language and interests and particularly humour are similar to British tastes,” said Mr Dunsford.

He said there were a whole range of new programmes to be launched next year including The Kumars at No.42, Little Britain and other dramas. Asked about programme repetition, Mr Dunsford said: “You can’t please everyone. Some people want to see re-runs of classic series. Others don’t.

But BBC Prime has one of the lowest repeat rates when compared to the vast majority of other channels.”

“The BBC’s “Britishness” sets it apart. It’s British entertainment at its best, and we are pleased to be able to offer it to more people in Malta,” said Mr Dunsford.
