Educational Reforms for disabled persons going ahead

Malta Independent Friday, 30 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The Ministry for Education is moving ahead in the implementation of reforms as proposed in the Spiteri report dealing with the provision of educational services for disabled persons.

In August 2005, the ministry created an Education Reform Steering Group to co-ordinate the required reforms and to ascertain effective communication between the parties concerned. The group is headed by the Minister for Education and includes the Permanent Secretary, the Director General and the political co-ordinator within the ministry.

In September 2005, George Borg was appointed as Network Co-ordinator for special schools and was also charged with co-ordinating the Spiteri report. Additionally, a centre was opened in Hamrun and Mr John Ayres was appointed expert for educational assessment of children with a disability with various professional sessions being organized in the past months.

The network co-ordinator is also collecting and analyzing information collected from schools to build profiles of those students attending special schools. Other initiatives include the possibility of distance learning and Masters courses for teachers who wish to specialize in this sector.
