A Senglea man will be spending the next three years in prison, after he was found guilty of two counts of perjury.
Addie Magri, 34, had been sentenced to a two-year jail term for heroin trafficking and possession with intent to sell. In his statement and during proceedings, Magri had named his supplier.
Magri had benefited from a reduced sentence because he had done so. Yet, during proceedings against the said person, Magri claimed he forgot whom he had bought the drugs from. Although his memory failed him on this detail, Magro remembered the amount of drugs he was carrying and other details.
He was therefore accused of perjury and of giving false testimony that could have led to another person being incarcerated for more than two years. Magri was found guilty of these crimes, of cannabis possession and of relapsing in view of previous convictions.
Magistrate Giovanni Grixti sentenced the man to a three-year jail term and ordered him to be interdicted for the next five years.
Superintendent Neil Harrison prosecuted.
Dr Jason Azzopardi appeared for the accused.
