Synthetic turf and a new floodlighting system are being installed at the football ground in San Gwann. The project is estimated to cost around Lm130,000.

The work on this ground began five weeks ago and is expected to be completed within four weeks.

The ground, covering 4,500 square metres, can be split up into four pitches for five-a-side football games.

Touring the work, Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech praised the committee which is responsible for the nursery in San Gwann for doing their utmost to provide the right environment for children to practice sport which, he said, is very important for their development.

Linking sport to the tourism industry, Dr Zammit Dimech said sport tourism attracted around 86,000 tourists last year. 56,000 of these tourists came to Malta for diving. He said the Malta Tourism Authority has chosen sport tourism as an important sector of the Maltese tourism industry and is thus marketing this aspect of tourism in Malta.
