GWU Calls for protection of port workers’ rights

The General Workers’ Union has filed a judicial protest to safeguard the rights of port workers if the management contract changes hands following the tendering process.

The protest was filed against the Malta Maritime Authority, Hili Company Ltd, La Valletta Terminal Co. Ltd, Malta Ports Terminals, TF Shipping Agencies, and Kuwait & Gulf Link Stevedoring Co. Ltd.

The GWU made reference to the tendering process currently under way for the management of merchandise contract at Grand Harbour. This contract is currently held by the Cargo Handling Co. Ltd.

The Union therefore filed the protest to safeguard the employees’ rights were they to change hands following the tendering process.

The GWU requested that the bids being made must reflect the prospective managers’ obligations towards the employees in accordance with the law.

The Union also asked for discussions to begin once the tender is awarded.
