A healthy breakfast is being offered weekly to all children attending government schools in Gozo, in a bid to promote healthy eating among the younger generation. This was announced during an event entitled “Healthy Breakfast” organised by the Gozo College last week.
All Year 4 government primary school students in Gozo attended the event, which was organised in close collaboration with the Health Promotion Unit. During the event, the children were treated to a complementary healthy breakfast that was sponsored by various local entities.
Performances involving the Gozo School of Drama and the Gozo School of Music, also forming part of the Gozo College, were included in the programme.
The morning’s programme was intended to create more awareness about the possibilities of healthy food and snacks among school age children in view of the increasing modern health- and lifestyle-related problems.
Displays of alternative healthy food, including bread, vegetables, fruit, beverages and other possible snacks were set up. Children had the opportunity to learn more about alternative healthy measures that could be taken, including the reduction of plastic and the need to separate waste.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, who introduced the event, said that modern lifestyles have driven us towards the adoption of a less healthy pattern including the choice of food and snacks for all. Minister Debono said that events such as “Healthy Breakfast” serve to draw our attention towards possible food choices that could be not only healthier but also tastier.
