New System for Local Councils Association elections ‘needed’

Malta Independent Friday, 17 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Labour Councillors Section applauded the news that Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg was calling for early elections to be held for a new Executive to be appointed at the Local Councils Association.

The news was published in The Malta Independent last Thursday.

Vice-president Luciano Busuttil said that the executive of the association should now reflect the 44-councillor majority enjoyed by Labour as well as its 37 – 31 mayor majority. He said that the association executive should not continue working on local business until the elections are held and called upon the government to change the electoral system that would truly reflect the prevailing majority.
