The government is committed to embellish the south and improve its economy, Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said while visiting Cospciua where a grove is being turned into a recreational area.

Mr Zammit said that the project being undertaken is one of many that is aimed to make the Cottonera area more attractive.

The project involves the creation of several pathways leading to small squares all through the grove. In the biggest square, which covers 1,500 square metres, a fountain will be built together with arches similar to those at the Upper Barrakka Garden.

Apart from keeping all the existing trees in their place, the ministry will also be planting 400 more. The pathways are more than a kilometre long, while a boundary wall is being built to surround the whole area which measures 50,000 square metres.

Mr Zammit said that 13 gazebos will be built and 83 benches will be installed. A model of the Cottonera area will also be on site and will serve as a playground for children.

All the work is being carried out by Public Works Department employees.
