One Man show at St James’ Cavalier

Malta Independent Saturday, 18 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Following last year’s success, the drama company Talenti is delighting the public with another one-man show. This year’s production is Il-Qassis, written, directed and presented, solely, by Mario Micallef.

Il-Qassis is a powerful play that describes the life of a humble priest. Several believe that priesthood is synonymous with a serene, quiet, and problem-free life. It is definitely not the case in this story. Dun Pawl, was a conscientious priest who worked hard at his chosen mission. However, sometimes circumstances come about which we cannot predict and which are so overwhelming that we cannot avoid.

Apart from serving in his local parish, Dun Pawl was passionate about art. In fact, he travelled several times simply to view artistic masterpieces exhibited in foreign museums. His sister, Madalen, adored her brother, and worried constantly over him. The sacristan, Salvu, albeit a little highly-strung, held Dun Pawl in high esteem. The Archbishop, was satisfied and at peace with the way Dun Pawl led the village parish. But, what about Antonio, the mafia character? How does he fit in? Can Il-Qassis shed light on these questions?

As is characteristic of Mario’s one-man shows, in this production, he again shall be interpreting the seven characters that unfold in the story. The singer, Diane Micallef and the musician, Vince Fabri, shall be assisting him in this production. Surprises shall definitely not be lacking in this show.

Given the dark nature of certain scenes, this production is only suitable for an adult audience.

Il-Qassis is being presented at the St James’ Cavalier theatre over two weekends, namely on 24, 25, 26 and 31 March and on 1 and 2 April.

Booking is available at the theatre booking office.
