First Division: San Gwann Stun Tarxien; Senglea obtain dramatic win

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Lowly San Gwann put up a fine display of solid and efficient football to stun promotion aspirants Tarxien.

San Gwann, coming from four consecutive defeats, were worthy winners and the three points gained give them a new lease of life in their quest to avoid relegation.

Anizoba was their hero yesterday being directly involved in both their goals, playing probably his best match since joining them from St Patrick.

The match went off to a flying start with both sides going near in the first five minutes. Tarxien went close on two minutes when a George Cutajar cross found Shead completely unmarked but his header went over the bar.

San Gwann immediately hit back with a Kevin Loughborough attempt from the edge of the area being saved by Curmi. Sixty seconds later and San Gwann were again denied through a great Curmi save following a good Penza run and a close range shot by Sciberras.

San Gwann took the lead at the start of the second period with Anizoba powering his way inside the area and firing low into the net. Four minutes later Anizoba should have added another one but he headed high after a bad sortie by goalkeeper Curmi.

Curmi made amends saving brilliantly a Stacy Vella shot after a corner action. On 70 minutes San Gwann doubled the score with another great Anizoba move on the right flank, and his low cross was met by Luke Vella Critien who beat Curmi with a grounder.

The match had an exciting finish with Carlos Camenzuli heading in the consolation goal three minutes from time.

Carlos Camenzuli, who had come in earlier as a substitute, almost snatched a dramatic equaliser but his fierce drive was blocked by Spiteri. In stoppage time referee Esther Farrugia sent off Tarxien goalkeeper Curmi apparently for pushing an opponent.

Senglea 1

St Patrick 0

An 89th minute header by Kenneth Abela gave Senglea an important victory against St Patrick to move to a healthier position in the table. For St Patrick this was a setback as another win would have put them with the front runners. However St Patrick had to bow to a defeat after four consecutive wins. Maybe a draw would have been a fairer result in this drab encounter.

The first half was really boring with neither side capable of creating a decent scoring opportunity. Both teams concentrated their efforts in destroying the opponents¹ initiative, with the result that the match failed to live up to its expectations.

Senglea had a good Bonello attempt hitting the side netting, and Mark Marlow missing the target after a Clint Caruana corner. The only save of the first half was effected by goalkeeper George Attard in the Senglea goal when he dived sideways to block a Thomas Caruana shot from the edge of the area.

On the resumption Senglea went close with a Bonello effort well saved by Mintoff. On 67 minutes substitute Gilbert Scerri went inside the area but goalkeeper Attard blocked in time. Four minutes later the Saints missed their best chance when Thomas Caruana failed to head home an inviting Costa Brazilino cross.

It was the Saints¹ best patch with Thomas Caruana again testing Attard, with the same Attard saving a close range header by Gilbert Scerri. A minute from time Senglea scored the all important winner when Kenneth Abela headed in a Mark Marlow freekick.

St Patrick tried desperately to get back on level terms but their efforts proved fuitile as Senglea defended well to snatch an important victory.
