Customs Workers present petition to PM

Malta Independent Wednesday, 26 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Customs workers presented a petition to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday so that a Memorandum of Understanding and agreement signed between the Finance Ministry and the Union Haddiema Maghqudin on 5 April 2006 will not be implemented.

The majority of Customs Class workers disapprove of the agreement, especially the terms that affect their working conditions.

They said they were only informed of the ‘salient points’ in the MOU through a circular issued by the Director General of Customs a day after the agreement was signed.

It was not fair, they said, that those 60 workers who approved the MOU, should decide the fate of 300 workers.

They called on the government to freeze the agreement because it offered conditions that would be inferior to those stipulated in the Public Service Management Code.
