26,679 Speed camera fines not 259,000 – ADT

Malta Independent Friday, 26 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Following yesterday’s report on speed camera fines, the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) wishes to clarify that 26,679 citations were issued by speed cameras in 2005 and not 259,000 as erroneously stated in the press conference on the Road Safety Campaign on Wednesday.

The 259,000 figure relates to the total traffic fines issued by wardens during the first 11 months of the year.

The ADT receives a percentage from the total amount collected from speed camera fines which is currently calculated at 16 per cent from which the safety campaign is being financed.

Since each speed camera fine costs Lm 30, if one had to calculate the total amount collected from speed camera fines, this would add up to Lm 800,000 with the ADT’s share coming up to around Lm 120,000 after expenses are deducted. ADT Chairman Gianfranco Selvaggi said that the campaign is costing the authority Lm 120,000.

Total speed camera fines were distributed as follows: Qormi: 2,175, St Paul’s Bay: 4,191, St Julian’s: 20,313.
