Students To publish book for children

Malta Independent Friday, 26 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Tumas Dingli Primary School in Attard has for the last three years been involved in a Socrates-Comenius Project called “Tales for Children – Friends for Life”. The partner schools were from Germany and Italy.

The aim of this project was to help pupils bridge fantasy with reality.

In the first year of the project the pupils were involved in various projects related to the world of magic and fantasy.

In the second year, the focus was on the kind of books children read. A questionnaire was sent to all the school pupils and their parents. Through the questionnaires, it transpired that Trevor Zahra was the most popular author among the Maltese pupils. Pupils had the opportunity to visit Italy and Germany and get to work with their partner schools.

During this year – the last year of the project – the pupils wrote a book of short stories for children. This was a joint venture among the three partner schools. Every story was started by a country, continued by another and finished by the third country. This was done through the use of emails. All the three stories in this book are translated into four languages: Maltese, English, Italian and German. Merlin Library is publishing the book.

The school will be launching this book next Tuesday at 10am.
