Malta Independent Saturday, 27 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Work to upgrade the Xemxija promenade is expected to be completed in the coming days, Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday.

During an on-site visit, Mr Zammit said the project was the result of cooperation between the government and the St Paul’s Bay local council which is providing all the material for this project. The government’s construction and maintenance department is doing the work.

The project will cost an estimated Lm76,000. The local council is supplying the material which will cost a total of Lm42,000.

A promenade 1,600 metres long covering an area of 4,000 square metres is being built, the minister said, adding that new railings separated by concrete bollards are also being fixed. Street lighting, storm water culverts to manage better rain water as well as benches and parking bays also form part of this project.

Minister Zammit said this project highlighted the way the government and local councils can work together in the best interest of their locality. He said the designs were drawn up by the local council.

The project designs gave due consideration to the safety of pedestrians and access for the disabled. A number of pelican lights have been also installed.
