Animation In Valletta on World No Tobacco Day

Malta Independent Wednesday, 31 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Anyone walking in Republic Street in Valletta this week is in danger of tumbling over a massive cigarette escaping from its public enemy number one – Nicorette Freshmint Gum. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Nicorette, together with the Health Promotion Department, are organising an activity with the aim of encouraging people to stop smoking.

Paula Camilleri, business development manager of V.J. Salomone Pharma Ltd, distributors of Nicorette, a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product that helps people stop smoking, said: “Such activities are important to help people become more aware of the dangers associated with smoking. Although many people would like to kick the habit, they find it hard to quit smoking using will-power alone. Today, products such as Nicorette are available on the market and are there to help people in their attempt to stop smoking.”

Health Promotion Department head Mario Spiteri said: “It is the duty of the Health Promotion Department to reach out to the public and support their attempts to stop smoking. The long-term effect of smoking is worrying, especially when one sees that in Malta, on average, one person a day dies as a result of this habit.”

For more information on the Nicorette product range, people may telephone 2122-0174 or ask their pharmacist for advice.
