More than 40 children attended an event organised by Club Xummiemu together with Nature Trust (Malta), on the occasion of GimghAmbjent 2006, in the run-up to World Environment Day on 5 June. The children met at Wied Ghollieqa just off the campus of the University of Malta in Tal-Qroqq.
They were given a presentation on the work carried out by Nature Trust in the valley, as well as general information about trees and animals they can find in the Maltese islands.
This presentation was held at the Nature Trust office near the nature reserve of Wied Ghollieqa.
After the presentation, the children were taken on a Nature Trail by Nature Trust members who showed them around the valley.
Wied Ghollieqa is the valley situated between the University of Malta and San Gwann, and which starts off from the San Gwann Industrial Estate and keeps on going down to Gzira Seafront (near Manoel Island), a stretch of two kilometres. The remaining part of the valley today is that which can be seen on one’s left when driving through Regional Road on the way from Msida.
Nature Trust (Malta) is the voluntary environmental organisation which among other things, is responsible for the Nature Reserve at Wied Ghollieqa.
Also present for the event was Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino, who discussed with the children the things they were being shown during the event.
Minister Pullicino said that it was essential that children are exposed to environmental education in such an informal setting like Wied Ghollieqa and praised the efforts and initiatives taken by organisations such as Nature Trust.
