A delegation from the EU and Foreign Affairs Committee has proposed to be a go-between for Baltic states wishing to penetrate North African and Middle Eastern markets.

The delegation, which is currently in Estonia, was headed by MP Jason Azzopardi and also includes MPs Leo Brincat, Jose Herrera and Clyde Puli.

The Maltese delegation said that in view of the good relations the country has with the aforementioned peoples, Malta could serve as a go-between or a logistical base for Baltic states wishing to do business.

In addition, Estonian politicians confirmed their commitment to push for a common European Union policy on irregular immigration, even though they are not directly hit by the problems that Malta faces.

The two delegations also discussed the possibility of having a common policy on Africa so as to tackle the problem at its source. They also discussed information technology developments including those in the fields of e-government, e-health, e-voting and e-cabinet.

The Maltese delegation also spoke of the Smartcity@Malta project and that the two countries should cooperate more in the field of IT.
