Melita Celebrates its 15th anniversary

Malta Independent Sunday, 18 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Melita Cable is celebrating its 15th anniversary since it was awarded the franchise agreement to provide exclusive cable TV services in Malta. In this 15-year period, the company has provided tens of thousands of customers with high-quality TV services. Melita is the brand name synonymous with TV in Malta as more than 74 per cent of households enjoy the services provided by the company.

In an event organised at the Xara Palace Hotel in Mdina to commemorate the agreement, Melita’s chairman, Joseph A. Gasan, reviewed the past achievements of the company and highlighted the future prospects.

“Melita has invested over Lm30 million to build a state-of-the art communications network providing customers with TV, Broadband, Networking and soon, telephony services. We feel privileged to have attracted such a large customer base in all our lines of business and to have attracted a talented and committed pool of employees who have made the success of Melita possible. Our commitment is to sustain our investment in the future, to continue to grow and to provide customers with the best possible service,” Mr Gasan said.

Melita connected its first TV customer in June 1992 and today has over 100,000 subscribers connected to its network. Melita provides one of the best sports packages in Europe and a movie channel that provides the latest movies available for pay-TV operators. Melita also provides TV services to the business community with more than 90 per cent of five-star hotels and hundreds of commercial outlets and offices connected to the network.

Melita, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Video-on-Line Ltd, has also managed to penetrate many Maltese and Gozitan households, as well as the majority of business firms providing reliable and best-in-class Internet service under the brand name ONVOL. ONVOL has been the prime catalyst in Malta to bring broadband Internet to almost 40 per cent of households.

As a leader in this field, ONVOL has created products that are tailor-made for the business sector, for the heavy Internet user and also for the casual user. The latest product to complement its existing suite of products is aimed at providing an ‘Always-On’ connection to all those users that are still dialling-up to connect to the Internet. Three weeks into the launch of UltraLite this has proved to be a very popular product.

To celebrate this great event with all its customers Melita is launching a series of activities. Melita subscribers can participate in a grand competition as the company is giving away 100 prizes, including the top prize – A Ford Focus and other high-value prizes such as plasma screens, home theatre systems, iPODS and others. All subscribers who on 30 October have been subscribed with the company for three months are eligible to participate.

Further announcements and more customer initiatives will be organised during the year.
