The Big blue, a true universe

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

AWL is presenting the second Maltese literary evening at this year’s Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2006. Entitled Kocc Nir Ver’’ Univers (the big blue, a true universe) is being held at Freedom Square, Valletta on Wednesday 9th August 2006 at 9.00pm. An open air theatre space has been set up at Freedom Square, which has been transformed into a beautiful garden for this festival.

Kocc Nir Ver’ Univers is based on the reading of original poetry in Maltese. The presentation, supported by live musicians, brings together the work of three writer-members of the group AWL, namely Caldon Mercieca, Michael Zammit and Glen Calleja who will meet the general public in a direct, dynamic way, face to face.

Explaining the contents of the Kocc Nir Ver’ Univers poetry recital, AWL said that Kocc Nir is the ‘big blue’, home to ‘the universe’… hosting the everything, all things big and small, and home to the domestic life that makes a home. In this house everything is still. But everything has a frequency, even the forgotten corners because they are only forgotten by people.

Kocc nir is a never-ending game of multiple resonances in a single location. It is a house of clocks and chandeliers and chairs and pictures and wallpaper flora whose sounds create one distinct sound. It is home to a quartet that becomes a quintet that becomes a sextet, home to all the thoughts that people think. It is home to all the children yet to be born and home to divine foolishness.

“Kocc Nir Ver’ Univers aims to be accessible and appealing to adults and children alike. Kocc Nir is a playful exploration in sound and no one is ever too old to play or explore.” said Dr. Michael Zammit, poet-member of AWL.

Entrance to this presentation of contemporary Maltese poetry is free. For more information one may call on the Malta Arts Festival hotline 9999 0145. Or visit website: www.maltaculture.com
