La Croce Wines at Birgu by Candlelight

Malta Independent Saturday, 7 October 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Camilleri Wines, through their recently launched La Croce brand of wines, will be teaming up with Del Borgo wine bar to participate in the Birgu by Candlelight due to be held in Vittoriosa today.

Camilleri Wines will be setting up their wine stand next to Del Borgo wine bar, from where an interesting selection of food provided by Del Borgo together with La Croce wines will be sold to all patrons visiting the stand.

Del Borgo will be serving a number of special platters prepared for the night which will be on offer together with La Croce wines in a special commemorative wineglass. Patrons will also be able to purchase the glass and be served La Croce wine in it.

“We are proud to be associated with this year’s Historic Cities Festival through our active participation in the Birgu by Candlelight event, an innovative event that is very much sought after since it was successfully staged last year,” said Camilleri Wines head of sales and marketing Claudio Camilleri.

“Moreover, we are giving our customers the opportunity to taste our La Croce brand in a historical setting that is very much in line with the brand’s image, characterised by the distinct eight-pointed cross. Launched almost three months ago, the La Croce wines are currently enjoying success in the local market and also with tourists, who see in our product an excellent reflection of Malta’s heritage and historical tradition. We are therefore looking forward to this event with great enthusiasm,” Mr Camilleri added.

The commemorative glass, commissioned specifically for tonight’s Birgu by Candlelight event, bears the Camilleri Wines and Del Borgo logos and will be an excellent souvenir of this cultural event.

As in previous Malta Historic Cities Festivals, Birgu by Candlelight is expected to be one of the major highlights of this year’s programme of events. The event which starts at 7pm will feature Carnival in Birgu at the time of the Knights as its central theme, complimented with a series of historical re-enactments of how the Knights used to celebrate Carnival in Birgu at a time when this maritime city served as their first capital following their arrival in Malta.

Those visiting Vittoriosa tonight will be able to enjoy a unique atmosphere which, not unlike Carnival, is celebrated once a year. Practically all the streets of Birgu will be lit by thousands of candles and Carnival, as celebrated during the time of the Order of St John’s rule, will be re-enacted. Wandering around the city’s narrow streets, visitors will also be able to enjoy numerous animation re-enactments inspired by real historical events.
