A total of 1,013 persons have been reported to the police as having been injured in traffic accidents between 1 January and the end of October, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg told Chris Agius.

617 were men and 396 women.

As regards reports made to local wardens, 4,717 women and 15,592 men were reported up to 27 November as having been involved in traffic accidents.

Smoke damages your pocket

The number of persons who have been arraigned and charged with smoking in prohibited places has mounted to 725. Of these, 500 were charged with having done so in Paceville.

Justice Minister Tonio Borg was replying to Carmelo Abela.

722 were charged with having smoked in bars or restaurants, two in a hospital and one in a public office.

50 owners of outlets have had steps taken against them for the same reason, the minister said.

Mr Abela would have wanted a breakdown of the places where the people were caught smoking such as buses, cinemas, theatres, etc.

In a separate reply, Health Minister Louis Deguara told Mr Abela that 282 have died of smoke-related causes so far this year: 213 were men and 69 were women.
