The entry requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce course should be modified to reduce the number of students and include subjects that are related to the degree, said Therese Mifsud during her speech yesterday. Ms Mifsud received her degree in B. Commerce.
The entry requirements of the B.Com. course should include subjects such as economics, accountancy or business studies, at least at intermediate level, she said.
Another suggestion Ms Mifsud made in her speech was to provide first year B. Com. students with a small booklet containing all the necessary information about study units and the assessment system.
“I believe that not only will it help the student reach his or her full potential at university but it will also reduce conflict between the student and the faculty administration,” she said.
She also called for more human resources in the
faculty, especially full-time lecturers.
“Full-time lecturers with experience in this field will be invaluable and continue improving the quality of tertiary education,” she said. “More full-time administration staff are needed to keep pace with the growing number of students in this faculty.”
Michael Formosa, who received his bachelor’s degree in Accountancy with honours spoke about graduates who could not find jobs in their area of specialisation.
In a separate graduation ceremony, he said that many graduates still do not find employment that complemented their studies and added that the demand is lower than the supply.
He pointed out that the
government should continue working to attract foreign investment which, in turn, will create more jobs for graduates.
