The Jesuit Faith and Justice Centre shares the concerns expressed by the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace on the situation in the property market in a report published last Friday.

In a statement, the centre said it is clear that young couples cannot afford the prices on the market. Due to the situation in the property market, they are often burdened with heavy loans at the beginning of their married lives.

“We would add that this is forcing these young couples to work long hours to pay off their debts. It is also a source of constant stress for families with an average and less-than-average income. All these stresses are certainly contributing to the family problems and family breakups which are constantly on the increase in Malta today,” the centre added.

The Jesuit Faith and Justice Centre also shared the commission’s concern on the current speculative practices in the property market which are at the root of the current price hikes. It supported the plea made by the Diocesan Commission for all political and social players to come together to reform the present system in such a way that the common good would prevail and all families would have access to decent housing in Malta.
