Family values are a focal point in the Malta Labour Party’s social policy, MLP leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.

Speaking in Bugibba, Dr Sant said that the MLP is focusing on bringing about a better quality of life for everyone. Those who are living a good life should be given the opportunity to improve their standard of living, and at the same time people at the lower end of the social scale should get all the support they need.

In its upcoming general conference which will discuss social issues, the MLP will show that it holds family values dear.

Dr Sant referred to the decision by the Commissioner for Children Sonia Camilleri not to accept a second term in office, saying it was yet another example that the government says one thing and practices another.

The Prime Minister boasts that children were being protected but the person who is responsible for this had said that she was not in a position to fulfil her duties, Dr Sant said.

The Labour Party will give the Commissioner for Children the power of an Ombudsman, he added.

He said 2007 was an important year for the MLP – “one that should lead to another win at the local council elections on 10 March and the general election, whenever it is held”.
