Enemalta Corporation yesterday denied various allegations made by Paola local council regarding the fuel storage facility in Kordin.

In a statement, Enemalta said that a contractor employed by the corporation is dismantling the fuel tanks in Kordin and this is being done according to method statements drawn up by experts in the field.

Copies of these method statements were passed on to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa) and architect Lino Bianco, who was appointed by Paola local council, it said.

It also added that, according to a report by Dr George Peplow, the levels of mercury and other substances at the site in question are not hazardous to public health.

Furthermore, Enemalta said, according to recent tests carried out, the levels of the substances found were not higher than the minimum accepted level. Enemalta also confirmed that all the studies requested by Mepa on health and safety and civil and environment protection had been carried out.

The statement said that copies of all the studies carried out were sent to Paola local council and architect Lino Bianco, who were also told what Enemalta was going to do with the site, and at no point in time were any objections raised.

Furthermore, Enemalta said, Mr Bianco sent a letter to Enemalta Corporation

saying he was satisfied with the studies carried out.

Finally, all the work is covered by a planning permit issued by Mepa, it said.
