The government’s commitment to upgrade the country’s infrastructure covers not only urban zones but areas where the Maltese public and tourists can enjoy themselves, Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said yesterday.

Speaking while visiting workers employed on the Ghar id-Dud project in Sliema, Mr Zammit explained that the work included the reconstruction of the wall supporting the promontory and the construction of a belveder close to where the chalet used to be situated.

Paving work was also carried out together with the installation of 46 new benches, 24 lamp-posts and litter bins. The project is to cost Lm200,000 and should be ready by March.

The kiosks that serve people on the promenade will be rebuilt according to plans conforming with the surroundings. These are to be approved by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.

A band stand will be set up in a prominent place along the promenade, and Mr Zammit said that live concerts will start to be held there.
