The Nationalist Party has been promising the embellishment of St Lawrence Square, the building of a polyclinic in Zebbug, a public garden in Marsalforn and a civic centre in Xaghra – but none of these promises has been kept, Malta Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.

Speaking in Gozo as part of the MLP’s local council election campaign, Dr Sant said that a Nationalist led council in San Lawrenz implemented only 55 per cent of its promises while that of Xaghra just made the halfway mark.

In San Lawrenz, the Nationalists have been promising an embellishment project of the main square for 13 years, and this should have enabled better traffic management, a wider pedestrian area and more parking spaces. But nothing has been done, the Labour leader insisted. An embellishment project at Dwejra has also remained just a promise.

The Nationalist led Zebbug council had also planned a recreational area in Xaghra Road, Marsalforn but, four years down the line, the project had not been implemented. A polyclinic should also have been built by the Nationalists but, again, this has not materialised 13 years after the promise was first made.

Dr Sant also spoke about internal differences between Nationalist councillors in Xaghra, and this meant that the council did not function properly.

The embellishment of the main square has not been carried out, while a day care centre opened only once a week and a promised night care centre was never set up.
