GWU Asks for ministry’s intervention

Malta Independent Thursday, 15 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The General Workers’ Union yesterday appealed for the Finance Ministry’s immediate intervention in a matter relating to bank employees.

It said it had started discussions with the ministry about taxes being paid by bank employees on fringe benefits which they had not yet taken. The GWU said it had left it to the ministry to remove the anomaly.

It said its Professionals, Finance and Services Section had waited months for discussions to start with the two unions, as had been promised by the ministry, but the talks had not been held.

Now the banks would be sending their accounts to the Inland Revenue Department, and hundreds of bank employees would be taxed on fringe benefits.
