‘Ghanja Tal-Poplu’ winner

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The winning entry for the Ghanja tal-Poplu 2007 festival (adult section) is Hawn Jien, a song written and sung by 19-year-old Corazon Mizzi, with a musical arrangement by Augusto Cardinali. Hawn Jien is the cry of an unborn child who poses existential questions to his insecure mother who is in negation of his existence.

Hawn Jien shows primarily the humane aspect of a subject that is at the centre of local debate. The song gives fire to this, while allowing room for personal reflection and interpretation.

This was Corazon’s second participation in the festival. Last year she performed another song she had written herself: Kieku Taf. Apart from pursuing her third year of studies at the Faculty of Law at the University of Malta, Corazon has been taking classical singing and piano lessons from an early age.

There were an initial 210 submissions for the festival, which was organised by the Youth Travel Circle and was held during the annual Malta Fireworks Festival.
