MOC Athletes On Good Cause mission at St Joseph Home

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Athletes Darren Gilford, Mario Bonello and Nicolai Portelli visited the St Joseph Home in Sta Venera on 30 May as part of the Good Cause campaign organised by the Malta Olympic Committee.

The three athletes, all part of the MOC Elite Scheme, visited the home to participate in the sporting events that were organised as part of the celebrations of the feast of St Joseph the worker.

The aim of the event was to encourage participation in sport, with the intention of giving the boys a boost socially through sporting activities. An active life through sport gives various benefits to an individual – the most important being that participation in sport gives everyone the opportunity to be a winner.

The group of boys living at the home were divided into three groups. Darren, Mario, and Nicolai each took a group and organised some games, briefly explaining which events they specialise in. Some gifts were also donated to mark the athletes’ visit.

A signed photograph of the athletes promoting the Olympic Spirit was presented to the director of the home Fr Frankie Cini.

In addition, two basketballs were donated to the home, and Olympic pins were handed out to everyone present.

More visits to the home are planned in the near future which, it is hoped, will help by creating a smile and encouraging social inclusion through sporting activities in the St Joseph Home community.
