Over 500 students at De La Salle College expressed an interest in a career in the hospitality and tourism industry when they visited a Malta Tourism Authority information stand at their college.

The stand was put up by the authority’s Industry HR Development Unit for the Careers Day organised by the college on 26 April.

The unit, responsible for developing human resources for the tourism industry at large, is in its sixth year with the CHOICE programme, a career awareness scheme aimed at fourth and fifth

formers in secondary schools.

CHOICE aims to raise the profile of the tourism sector as a career. It has so far reached over 10,000 students, and 29 secondary schools have participated in this year’s programme. The unit also works with guidance teachers to make them aware of the opportunities that exist.

The MTA has also issued two publications in the series of Career Guides aimed at

secondary school students. Career Guide Vol. 1 covers 23 careers that may be pursued in the hospitality and catering sectors, while Vol. 2 covers a further 16 sectors in the

travel and tourism sectors.
