Re-enactment Of a traditional Maltese wedding in Zurrieq

Malta Independent Saturday, 19 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The narrow, picturesque streets of Zurrieq will be transformed into a typical wedding scene from the 16th to 18th century tomorrow morning, as visitors will be able to enjoy a re-enactment of a traditional Maltese wedding of the period.

The event is being organised by the cultural committee of the St Catherine’s Musical Society of Zurrieq. Guests will join the bride and groom in Republic Square, the main square of the village, at 10am, and will then accompany the couple in a

traditional wedding march along Carmel Street.

Streets will be adorned with various examples of traditional Maltese crafts, while traditional live music and folk-singing (ghana) will serve as an accompaniment to the wedding march. The actual wedding ceremony will be held on the parvis of St Andrew’s chapel, which also dates back to the period in which the wedding will be set.

Those wishing to enjoy traditional Maltese cuisine during the wedding can purchase tickets from Topsale Stationery in Triq Guzepp Zammit, Zurrieq, or Miami Paradise in Republic Square, Zurrieq. Alternatively, reservations can also be made by calling the ticket hotline 7906-5985, or by sending an email to [email protected]
