The Malta International Airport’s in-house union, Rampa Union, yesterday complained that it was being discriminated against and called on MIA to allow its employees to choose the union they wanted to represent their interests through a secret vote.

The Rampa Union pointed out that the MIA had still not officially recognised it and, as a result, it could not participate in the negotiations for a new collective agreement.

It said that the MIA was also aware that there was a large number of resignations from the Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) and the General Workers’ Union (GWU) after the last collective agreement was signed on 29 March 2005. It added that the majority of the MIA employees knew that the collective agreement discriminated against them.

The union called on the MIA to take all necessary measures, so that all members could, through a secret vote, choose, without discrimination, the union of their choice.

If this does not take place, it said, the union will not recognise any collective agreement that will be signed against the will of MIA employees.
