FWA To fire ‘sunset gun’ for ‘Notte Bianca’

Malta Independent Saturday, 6 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna will be contributing to this year’s edition of Notte Bianca in Valletta with the firing of a ‘sunset gun’ from the Saluting Battery at the Upper Barrakka in Valletta. The re-enactment will recreate a fascinating aspect from the past, daily milieu of the capital, which served to signal to the public the time at which all town gates were to be closed and the bridges to be lifted till the following morning. At times of national calamity, such as the threat of invasion, internal strife or the threat of pestilence a curfew would be imposed on the entire population of the city, curtailing its movement after dark. The sunset gun also served to indicate the beginning and end of the curfew hours throughout which they were to remain indoors.

The firing display will take place at 9pm sharp following the British artillery drill of the 19th century. A running commentary will be provided in Maltese and English, explaining the proceedings.

The Saluting Battery is held in trust by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna which, with the help of the Malta Tourism Authority, has been responsible for its rehabilitation and restoration since 2004. The history of the saluting battery covers four centuries, having been built by the Order of St John in the 16th century. It remained in constant military use till the immediate post war years.

On the same occasion the Saluting Battery is to be converted into a large open air banqueting area for a fund-raising ‘Curry Night’ where Notte Bianca revellers can eat and relax in the magnificent harbour surroundings from 7pm. Proceeds from this event will be going towards the continued restoration and upkeep of this important historic attraction. Entrance to the Saluting battery is achieved from the Upper Barrakka Gardens down the steps behind the Strickland monument.
