A 30-year-old would- be police recruit, filed an application to the First Hall of Civil Court in its Constitutional Jurisdiction against the Police Commissioner saying that his application to enter the police corps was rejected because he had tattoos on his arms.

Joseph Zarb, from Marsa, alleged that other people sporting tattoos had been accepted as recruits and there were several corps members who has a tattoos.

He alleged that his fundamental human rights have been breached by the police’s decision to stop the process of his application.

Mr Zarb applied on 17 May, and on 7 September he received a letter in which he was informed that his application could not be processed any further because he had incorrectly filled part of the application form regarding tattoos.

On 17 October the police informed him that “he has to remove tattoos from both arms before being considered for recruitment.”

Mr Zarb asked to be admitted as a recruit and asked the Police Commissioner to declare that he was treated unjustly.

The writ was signed by lawyer David Farrugia Sacco.
