An Inclusive curriculum

Malta Independent Saturday, 17 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

George Borg, inclusive and special education network coordinator, has presented documents which are to be distributed in schools, aimed to help the schools provide an inclusive curriculum. The documents are part of the project called “Towards an Inclusive Curriculum” whose aim is to provide the opportunity for students and teachers to join in one common aim in all national curriculum subjects. The project will help create an environment and will seek to stimulate teaching under which all students will have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Students should have the privilege of taking an active part in lessons and to develop a sense of inquisitiveness towards the world around them.

The subjects are mathematics, Maltese, English, social studies, history, geography, religion, science, physical education, ICT, design and technology, personal and social development, home economics, and creative art. A supplement has been created for each subject which schools can use. Each supplement identifies the mainstream subject syllabus and modifications required for students with individual educational needs.

These were discussed and agreed upon by specialists in the curriculum in both mainstream and special education. Each supplement also includes attainment level descriptions which can be used by teachers to decide which description best fits a student’s performance.

The attainment level descriptions can also be used to annually inform school developmental planning and evaluate where resources need to be placed in future years to raise the quality of education. As a consequence this should increase the levels of opportunity to raise student attainment.
