Entering Winston’s studio one would think that you are entering Ali Baba’s cave. For with all the mirage of colours, paintings and pieces of stones and bits and pieces of various objects, one would be forgiven for making this mistake. Winston tends to paint everywhere and on anything in his studio. He does not use a palette so you tend to find bits and pieces of cardboard fully covered with paint. On occasions, he might experiment with the paint covered papers perhaps delivering an abstract piece of art. This is Winston and his art world - where anything can turn to something, from a simple landscape to a stupendous stormy Maltese view. In this clutter, Winston is in his element using anything to create whatever is passing through his mind. Winston likes to experiment with different media and styles. It is not unusual for him to overlay a perfectly executed scene, which would not be to his liking, with a totally different piece of art. Over the years he has matured in his art through his perseverance and experimentation. One cannot fault Winston for churning out the same style of art year in year out. He has gone from classical watercolours to quasi-impressionistic abstract paintings using mixed media with a thick impasto. On the walls in his Valletta studio, one can view all styles of Winston’s evolutionary trip - abstract, impressionistic, and classical – carried out in various media and colours that surely prove Winston’s creativity and versatility.
The exhibition at Gallery G delivers a varied example of Winston’s capabilities and versatility. He presents sconces in oil, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media as well as classical style and more aggressive paintings delivered in thick colourful impasto.
