The president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, Victor A. Galea, said the chamber was satisfied at the initiatives announced for the regeneration of Fort St Elmo and Marsamxett harbour.

He was speaking after attending the official launch of the government’s Vision for Fort St Elmo and Marsamxett Harbour by Investments, Industry and IT Minister Austin Gatt.

The proposals are varied and include new quays, a terminal for cruiseliners; an extension to the Msida Marina in Pietà; new promenades; a new hotel; restoration projects and afforestation. Mr Galea said that the chamber was naturally in favour of these initiatives as they would contribute to further Malta’s economic momentum, especially in tourism niches such as yachting and cruise liners.

“Another important aspect is the proposal to build a breakwater in Marsamxett Harbour. This is a necessity as Pietà, Msida, Gzira and Sliema can now be exploited further to reach their full potential. This investment in infrastructure by the authorities is conducive to more investment from the private sector in the area,” added the chamber president.

Mr Galea said the regeneration proposals for both Grand Harbour and Marsamxett harbour would bring about an increased economic activity, new employment opportunities and overall better environment for the area.

“The Chamber looks forward to the day in the near future when the project kicks off. This project together with those announced earlier this year for the regeneration of the Grand Harbour, were more and more the proper vehicle for Malta to become a first-rate tourist destination.
