The National Book Council paid tribute to Gorg Mifsud Chircop, whom it described as an eminent scholar and researcher, who passed away on Wednesday morning.

Dr Mifsud Chircop did his utmost so that our folklore is appreciated by both Maltese and foreigners. He was the local point of reference in this field, the book council said.

He studied his subjects in Malta and also in Gottingen, Palermo and Sheffield. One of his major activities was the promotion of ghana, folk singing. Since 1998, he coordinated the annual National Ghana Festival.

Like A. Dundes he strongly believed that researchers have the responsibility of making people conscious about their culture.

The book council said: “For a long time, he contributed to several radio programmes promoting the proper use of the Maltese language. He compiled a number of textbooks and for two years he was President of the Maltese Teachers’ Association.

“Those who worked closely with Gorg Mifsud Chircop couldn’t fail to notice his dedication and the great energy he invested in the missions accomplished. He did his work meticulously and with passion.

“Dr Gorg Mifsud Chircop definitely served his country well and deserves the nation’s praise.”

A press statement expressing sorrow was also issued by the Mosta local council.
